Media Collective a reality

The Media Collective is the new co-working space housing SYN Media and other media-making youth organisations. Gandel Foundation provided a Major Grant to SYN media for the development, which is located at RMIT’s Media Precinct.

This project has been in the making since 2016, and brings together SYN Media, RMITV and Catalyst magazine in a central location on RMIT’s city campus. It boasts a suite of training and working spaces for an independent community of young media-makers.

The Media Collective includes a shared office, a training space, five broadcast radio studios and state-of-the-art television studios. Here, SYN volunteers will have more opportunities to develop practical media production skills and industry networks.

This project is the culmination of the largest investment in infrastructure SYN has ever made. With the support of Gandel Foundation and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, SYN built three new radio studios equipped with industry standard broadcast gear.

This development greatly increases SYN’s capacity to provide media education to the thousands of students that pass through its doors every year. “We understand the value of giving young journalists a chance to hone their skills and get real-world broadcasting experience – because the work of our media industry is essential to the health of our democracy,” said The Hon. Gabrielle Williams at the official opening of the Collective.

Moving into The Media Collective from its old offices on Cardigan Street, SYN’s spaces are now fully accessible and able to provide more young people a platform to share their views on issues that matter to them.
